Lighting design for architects

Lighting design

Co-operation at eye level – expertise from the first sketch

Light is far more than just illumination – it shapes atmosphere, creates functions, forms spaces, and has a lasting impact on users' well-being. For architectural firms, precise and early lighting design is an indispensable component. Together, we develop holistic, aesthetic, and technical lighting concepts that seamlessly integrate into your architectural vision – sensuous, innovative, and sustainable.
At DAY & LIGHT, lighting design does not begin with the detailed design phase, but rather at the very point where architecture takes shape: in the competition stage, in the urban planning concept, and through an in-depth dialogue with the space, materials and users. Our approach is based on the HOAI service phases and incorporates advanced lighting analyses, simulations and practical model testing.

Lighting design for architects by phases

Phase 1–2: Fundamental Determination & Preliminary Planning – Understanding the Project, Uncovering Potential

At the start of every project, we establish contact and clarify responsibilities. We introduce the project team and, together with the clients, define the methodology, processing procedures, deadlines, and budget specifications. We develop an understanding of the construction task, the client, and the end-user.
Even in competitions, many parameters of the lighting effect can be influenced early on through daylight analyses, insolation and shading studies. Together with the planning team, we analyse building geometries, sightlines and orientations with a view to daylight potential, shading and reflection. For this purpose, we record sightlines, thoroughly check daylight penetration, insolation and shading conditions, and take into account not only the architecture but also energy-related and usage-related requirements.
Our range of services for this phase includes:

  • Competitive consulting with light strategy analysis for early influence
  • Feasibility studies to examine implementation potential and initial cost estimations
  • Solar and shading studies for evaluating building and environmental impacts
  • Daylight provision and assessment of visual connection in accordance with DIN EN 17037
  • Glare assessment for ensuring visual comfort
  • Perception concepts that consider individual user needs
  • Development of initial impact scenarios and design parameters
  • Analysis of existing lighting conditions and determination of user requirements
  • Advice based on standards (e.g. DIN 5034, DIN EN 17037)

Phase 3–4:Design and execution planning – Concept and technical detail planning

In the design phase, we deepen the planning by further developing the impact concept and examining technical feasibility. Together with the planning team, we develop detailed lighting concepts that optimally combine visual atmosphere and technical feasibility. We simulate luminance levels and investigate the reflective and transmissive behaviour of glass, materials and surfaces. In this process, we determine the necessary lighting tools such as luminous intensity, light distribution and colour temperatures. These requirements are elaborated in detail and integrated into the lighting concept, which also considers urban planning contexts and spatial relationships. A catalogue of measures with prioritisation and a timeline completes the concept.

Our services in this phase:

  • Integrated lighting concepts, tailored to the room's purpose, materiality, and functionality
  • BIM-based lighting simulations for realistic visualisation of various scenarios
  • Photometric evaluation of materials with regard to reflection and transmission
  • Definition and selection of lighting tools (luminaires, control, light colour, light distribution)
  • Example model construction for daylight situations with tests under an artificial sky
  • Development of action catalogues with priorities and scheduling
  • Artificial lighting design across all HOAI project phases (1 to 8)
  • Advice on glass selection and the development and modification of light fittings.
  • Economic calculations for optimising costs and energy consumption

Phase 5–7: Execution planning, preparation and participation in tender award

In the detailed design and execution planning, precision is key. We develop installation situations, define lighting parameters for tenders, and coordinate interfaces with electrical planning, façade, and interior finishing.
Services in this phase:

  • Development of assembly and installation plans for luminaires and controls
  • Development of technical details concerning glare-free operation, vandal resistance, and light immissions
  • Creation of neutral and independent tenders
  • Consultancy and support during the tender phase with bid evaluation
  • Planning and integration of control, dimming, and sensor solutions

Phase 8: Site supervision, commissioning, documentation

We oversee the construction work on-site, check the implementation with a focus on quality, and ensure compliance with all lighting technology specifications. With effective sampling, testing, and adjustments, we optimise the lighting effect in the final stages. After commissioning, we support monitoring, recalibrations, and post-occupancy evaluation.

Our role:

  • Construction-supportive consulting or supervision of lighting installations
  • Performance sampling and real-time tests in space
  • Performance of lighting measurements for quality assurance
  • Contributing to the creation of user manuals and documentation
  • Adjusting floodlights and light scenes, optimising illumination
  • Sustainable care in the company for the optimisation of energy and light quality

Interdisciplinary Collaboration & BIM

We view lighting design as a collaborative process, closely integrated into BIM-supported model-based planning. This integration ensures the compatibility of our lighting concepts with the overall digital model – including geometries, light sources, and control systems. Changes are automatically communicated to all project stakeholders, thereby minimising planning risks and saving resources.

  • Lighting design as a fully integrated and connected part of architectural design
  • Transparent and efficient voting with all project stakeholders
  • Optimal planning and cost security through data-based decisions
  • Early identification of conflicts and plausibility checks
