A new building with a gross floor area of approximately 260,000 square metres has been constructed on a 10-hectare site in Berlin-Mitte to accommodate around 4,000 employees of the Federal Intelligence Service. DAY & LIGHT designed the natural and artificial lighting for all front-of-house areas across the three building sections, including the outdoor facilities. In addition to the client’s strict security requirements, coordinating with three different architectural firms, each with highly individual design requirements, presented a particular challenge. The buildings were planned and constructed in different phases. The planning and construction process ran from 2005 to 2016.
As in some other projects, we learned how to handle a large number of stakeholders, trades, and authorities. This allowed us to acquire a high degree of flexibility, as well as an efficient and goal-oriented approach to interface management. For smooth planning progress, we adopted clear presentation formats in order to provide users and clients with meaningful decision-making documents.
