The new Medical Campus was built in the Ries district of Graz between 2012 and 2023. The concept is based on the close integration of workspaces, teaching areas and leisure spaces within an inner-city site. Commissioned by the lead designers Riegler Riewe, DAY & LIGHT carried out a comprehensive daylight study, supported the pilot project for the laboratory and research building in relation to ÖGNB/ÖGNI certification, and advised on the development of sun and glare protection systems as an integral part of the façade design.
The narrow, elongated building structures were systematically analysed in their depth and orientation for optimal daylight provision and natural ventilation. The vertical staggering – with two-storey lecture halls and assembly hall as well as the campus level above as a circulation level – enabled clearly zoned daylight concepts for public, semi-public and research-related areas.
Specific strategies for glare limitation, control of solar gain, and coordination with artificial lighting were developed for laboratories, research zones, and high-traffic teaching areas. The result is a campus with high visual and amenity quality, which has received international recognition through its achieved Platinum certifications and numerous awards.
