Designing with light beings

The history of DAY & LIGHT is characterised by professional continuity and the passing on of knowledge over decades. It follows a trajectory that has emerged within the field of professional lighting design.

The origins lie in 1970s lighting design and are closely linked to the environment of Christian Bartenbach connected. During this phase, lighting design was systematically researched, measured, and established as an independent planning discipline.

Ulrich Werning stems from this professional context. As a former managing director at Lighting design: Christian Bartenbach he translated this heritage into an independent practice. 1In 982 he founded the Lighting design Ulrich Werning and in parallel, built the lighting planning department of the building services group HL-Technik AG auf. In this environment, research, measurement, daylight guidance, and systematic analysis have been consistently linked with architecture.

In the late 1990s, with Frank Vetter, Stefan Vetter and Markus Tuppen Further formative individuals were added. Methodology, working methods, and experience from this research-oriented school were continued in joint practice and refined in new project contexts.

With the partnership Warning Tropp and Company from 1998 and its subsequent continuation as Warning Day & Light from 2004 this developed into an independent form of office. The name DAY & LIGHT established itself in this context.

During this period, the team worked on the project Stuttgart 21 – starting with daylight measurements on Fraunhofer Institute, later with the artificial lighting design in the following project phases.

Today, DAY & LIGHT stands for lighting design that combines technical precision with creative clarity. In the field of corporate lighting, the practice shapes the spatial identity of brands such as Google and Porsche. Light is planned here as an integral component of architecture, brand and use.

At the same time, DAY & LIGHT works in sensitive cultural contexts. The invitation to Japan to illuminate the Zen temple Manpuku-ji, founded in 1661 by Ingen Ryūki Zenji and today National treasure, stands for a practice in which restraint, expertise, and contextual understanding are paramount.

In addition to its project work, DAY & LIGHT is actively involved in teaching and professional associations (fild). These activities are part of the continuous engagement with lighting design as a discipline and its further development within the professional discourse.
