Lighting design for a museum in transition

For the comprehensive refurbishment of the listed Kunsthalle zu Kiel, we are planning both daylight and artificial light on behalf of Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. Based on detailed daylight simulations, we are developing concepts for shading, blackout, and a finely tuned control system. In parallel, we are designing the artificial light planning, including exhibition lighting. The focus is on the precise interplay of daylight and artificial light: exhibits are to be presented optimally, visitors are to experience a pleasant atmosphere – without losing the connection to the outside space, time of day, and weather – and at the same time, the conservationally necessary light protection requirements are to be met.

As air conditioning, energy efficiency and operating costs play just as important a role as the ambition to make the building future-proof in terms of technology and design while preserving its listed building status, we work in close coordination with architecture, building services and building physics. The detailed planning for our lighting concepts is currently in the final phase. The aim is a flexible, sustainable and user-friendly lighting system that meets the high standards of contemporary museum operations and gives the Kunsthalle zu Kiel a clear, forward-looking lighting character.
