The Nymphenburg Palace complex is gaining the new Natural History Museum – BIOTOPIA – to the north of the grounds through alterations and new construction.

The new building will expand the existing Museum of Man and Nature and will replace an institute building from the 1970s. This new building will be sensitively integrated into the historic ensemble, adopting existing structures, design language, and facade aesthetics.

In collaboration with the planning team, a lighting concept has been developed to support the architectural language and make the spaces perceptible in their form and materiality.
Upon entering the courtyard, the seamless transition between interior and exterior space is palpable through the transparent facade of the new building. The shells that shape the generous air spaces and staircases in the exhibition hall are brightly illuminated by natural daylight entering through skylights during the day and by supplementary artificial light in the evening, noticeably connecting the building's levels.
In the exhibition areas, the lighting integrates into the spaces, creating a balanced luminous environment and setting the stage for effectively showcased exhibits.
