Lighting concept The lighting makes the square experienceable as a space with high quality of stay in the evenings and at night.
Sightlines are picked up and supported: To the north, the staggered arrangement of the town hall and St. John's Church is made visible in terms of brightness and detail. The square to the south is visually enclosed by the modern facade lighting of the Sparkasse and the department store. The building facades to the east and west will be partly directly illuminated and partly subtly brightened by reflection off the ground.
The lighting principle of the plaza highlights the edges of the space. The luminaires are arranged to the west along the plane trees: floodlights on poles approximately 6m high illuminate both the plaza and the trees. The trees are additionally lit from below, thus offering a cosy and friendly area for the local restaurants.
Along the eastern row of houses, spotlights are arranged in the eaves area. They supplement the vertical illuminance with brilliance and high contrasts from point light sources.
The historical wall-mounted lights are to be technically upgraded and preserved as part of the facades. They supplement with diffused brightness near the facade.
This leaves the plaza free of light poles and creates zones where individual accents can be depicted.
The row of water fountains stands out with integrated lighting and accompanies the central visual axis. Fountains and monuments are highlighted individually from the ground, as well as by spotlights on the poles.
In particular, the town hall facade is to receive more detailed lighting: the relief of the facade will be highlighted by the combination of warm white and neutral white light colours. This can be achieved using ground-recessed spotlights, facade-integrated luminaires, and spotlights on poles.
