The single-span arch bridge, designed by SSF Ingenieure, was built to carry State Road 2312 over the motorway. The North Bavarian Motorway Authority commissioned DAY & LIGHT to illuminate this imposing structure, known as the „Gateway to the Spessart“, to ensure it looks impressive at night. The lighting concept was implemented in 2020 following the completion of the structure.

High-performance LED projectors at the bridge abutments illuminate the arch in such a way that the plasticity of the sculpture is clearly visible. As the arch could only be illuminated from bottom to top, the light distributions were calculated and simulated for optimal illumination in order to reduce residual light scatter into the sky as much as possible.

This is one of three bridge lighting schemes now designed by DAY & LIGHT for the North Bavarian Motorway Authority.
