Cosy ambience – lighting for the redesign of the town hall square

Bingen Büdesheim Town Hall Square chip

With the redesign of the Rathausplatz, the people of Büdesheim have been given a much-anticipated town centre. Landscape architects Adler & Olesch created a square with a high quality of stay and multiple functions. It forms the central hub between Burgstraße, with its partly preserved historic village structure, and Saarlandstraße, which also has a partially historic structure. The new spaciousness creates opportunities for events or markets and, with its combination of abundant greenery and seating, particularly in the adjacent Dichtergarten (Poets' Garden), offers a pleasant atmosphere for lingering. The neighbourhood plays boules here and actively participates in maintaining the flowers.
The old town hall serves as a focal point and historical backdrop for the square.

The lighting supports the concept of spaciousness, as well as the understatedly modern yet still green and cosy seating areas. Simple light columns are integrated into the rows of trees that enclose the square. They illuminate the surface of the square and the canopy of leaves, thereby defining the space and creating cosy zones with a lively interplay of light and shadow around the benches. Once fully grown, the trees will also shade the rear light towards the residential buildings. The character of the bright paved surface is well preserved in its play of colours and texture even in the evening with the lighting.

The „Rose Pergola“, a metal sculpture with laser-cut rose petals, also forms an introvert seating area. The internal spotlighs with a narrow light distribution strengthen the plasticity and the structure is cast as a shadow pattern on the floor.

As the namesake of the square, the town hall is subtly highlighted across its area by low-power floor-recessed spotlights, thus shaping the identity of the square.
