For over a century, the Paul-Heyse-Tunnel has passed under the 26 tracks of Munich Central Station. According to Deutsche Bahn, the bridge structure, manufactured by the Royal Bavarian Court Schlosserei Eisenwerk München AG (originally Kiessling – C. Moradelli), fulfilled its requirements well beyond this century. With increasing traffic, the underpass was an ordeal for all cyclists and pedestrians, who were forced to cross the 210m long tunnel.
In 2016, we were finally commissioned by the state capital Munich, particularly through effect lighting, to improve the atmosphere in the underpass.
As light has always been a holistic and cross-trade topic for us, we ultimately applied lighting and acoustic measures in teamwork with the electrical planners, architects, and civil engineers – without major interventions into the building structure.
After the completion of the Arnulfpark bridge „next door,“ the Paul-Heyse underpass is now the second crossing of the Munich railway tracks that we have had the privilege to illuminate.
