The „received night“: restrained lighting design for Schongau

Schongau Town Wall FV

As part of a landscape planning competition for the area surrounding the historic Schongau town walls, lohrer.hochrein were commissioned with the open space planning and we with the lighting design. The aim of the project is to gently enhance the entire town wall ensemble and make its special atmosphere tangible in the evenings too. The first phase of construction has already been completed, and the continuation for the remaining areas has now been approved by the City of Schongau.

The lighting concept focuses on the continuously running city wall: its entirety should remain recognisable from a distance as well as when walking along the paths. Mast lights arranged at regular intervals provide uniform, safe path lighting without appearing as bright points in the cityscape. Additional, precisely aligned spotlights on the same masts accentuate wall surfaces, towers, and gates.

Warm white light with good colour rendering is used, so that natural stone, rendered surfaces, and the accompanying greenery are discernible. Towers, gateways, and projections are highlighted, while the brightness gently decreases towards the tranquil surfaces. The trees remain visible as dark silhouettes against the illuminated wall.

By using well-shielded LED technology with minimal glare and scattered light, safe pathways are created without creating areas of fear. At the same time, the historic cityscape is atmospherically staged – with a respectful approach to darkness and the „preserved night“.
